China’s maanrover Yutu is waarschijnlijk kapotgegaan door maanstenen. Dat zegt de Chinese overheid in een zeldzaam moment van openheid over het lot van rover, die na enkele weken op het maanoppervlak plotseling de geest gaf. Sinds februari zendt de rover nog wel data terug naar aarde, maar beweegt het ‘Jaden Konijn’ niet meer.
Vanwege de problemen met de rover zorgen er ook voor dat China’s maanlandingsplannen verder de toekomst in worden geschoven. De robotische Chang’e 5-missie, die een grondmonster van de maan terug zou moeten sturen naar de aarde, is tot 2020 uitgesteld.
Te rotsachtig
Het Chinese staatspersbureau Xinhau meldt dat de rover waarschijnlijk stuk is gegaan door de rotsachtige ondergrond van de maan. Het haalt daarbij Zhang Yuhua aan, Yutu’s missie-ontwerper. “De landingsplaats was veel rotsachtiger dan we aanvankelijk hadden gedacht”, zegt hij.
Gefaald succes
Yutu reed sinds zijn landing in december vorig jaar slechts 20 meter van de bijbehorende Chang’e 3-sonde. Sindsdien stuurt de rover nog dagelijks informatie naar de aarde, maar het mechanisme waarmee het robotje moet rondrijden werkt niet meer. China zweeg lange tijd over de toestand van de rover, al gaf het land in maart wel officieel toe dat die niet meer reed.
Doorgeschoven
Dat de rover stuk is, heeft gevolgen voor de toekomstige maanmissies van het land. Aanvankelijk zou een Chang’e 5-missie in 2017 moeten landen op de maan, maar dat is doorgeschoven naar 2020 zodat experts het design van de rover kunnen aanpassen. De Chang’e 5-rover zou niet alleen moeten rondrijden, maar ook monsters van de maan moeten verzamelen.
De missie daar tussenin, Chang’e 4, staat wel nog steeds gepland voor 2015.
