Canada heeft een nieuw biljet van 5 dollar geintroduceerd met daarop een afbeelding van Canadarm2, een astronaut, en het ISS.
Op de voorkant van het biljet staat een afbeelding van de Canadarm2, de robotische arm die het Canadian Space Agency op het ISS plaatste. De Canadarm2 assisteert astronauten tijdens ruimtewandelingen, en helpt met het binnenhalen van vrachtschepen.
Naast Canadarm2 staan ook Dextre (een geavanceerde robot in het ISS) en een astronaut op het biljet.
“De afbeeldingen tonen Canada’s bijdrage aan de internationale ruimtevaart aan. Ze demonstreren onze verkenningsdrang en onze motivatie om als land grenzen te verleggen.”

Het nieuwe biljet komt per vandaag in omloop in Canada, maar werd al veel eerder gepresenteerd. In april liet Chris Hadfield – wie anders – het biljet al vanuit het ISS aan de wereld zien.
De pas gepensioeneerde astronaut kwam gisteren naar het hoofdkantoor van het CSA in Quebec om het nieuwe biljet in omloop te brengen.
“Het nieuwe design is een keuze van de Canadese bevolking. Tijdens een wedstrijd werd gevraagd welke technologie symbool staat voor Canada en wat we als land hebben voortgebracht. Canadarm is de absolute nummer 1 als het gaat om onze technologische relavantie.”

Naast het 5-dollarbiljet werd ook een nieuw biljet van 10 dollar geintroduceerd. De nieuwe biljetten hebben naast een nieuw design ook een aantal nieuwe veiligheidsmaatregelen.
